Ghana Armed Forces engineers have completed the 175.6km Accra–Kumasi Expressway right-of-way clearing in 19 weeks, marking a major infrastructure milestone for Ghana.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has successfully completed the clearing of the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, accomplishing the assignment in 19 weeks and that is one week ahead of the original 20-week target.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in the preparation of one of Ghana's most strategically important infrastructure projects.
Announcing the completion, the Minister for Defence, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, declared:
“Mission accomplished.”
The Minister confirmed that the GAF engineering teams had successfully cleared the full 175.6-kilometre corridor within 19 weeks, describing the achievement as a significant milestone that brings Ghana closer to the commencement of construction works on the Accra–Kumasi Expressway.
The assignment was undertaken by specialised engineering units of the Ghana Armed Forces and involved the deployment of personnel and heavy equipment across the entire corridor.
The Ghana Armed Forces had earlier stated that the right-of-way clearing was a critical preparatory phase for the project, supporting feasibility studies and initial and detailed engineering design work. The corridor covers approximately 175.6 kilometres and was originally scheduled to be cleared within 20 weeks.
The engineering teams worked through difficult terrain, dense vegetation and challenging weather conditions while engaging with traditional authorities and communities along the route.
The successful completion ahead of schedule therefore represents not only progress on the expressway project but also a demonstration of professionalism, discipline, engineering capability, teamwork and effective project execution.
The achievement also reflects cooperation across several government institutions.
In announcing the completion, Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei commended Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Roads and Highways Minister Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the Ghana Armed Forces engineering teams for their commitment, dedication and teamwork in advancing the project.

In August, he reported that less than 20 kilometres remained and expressed confidence that the exercise would be completed within the planned schedule.
The completion now represents the fulfilment of that objective.
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is more than a road project. It is a potentially transformative economic corridor connecting some of Ghana's most important population, commercial, agricultural and industrial centres.
The proposed six-lane expressway is expected to improve the movement of people and goods between Accra and Kumasi, reduce travel times, ease congestion and lower transportation costs.
Government has described the project as a flagship initiative under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme, with US$1.7 billion already deposited into a dedicated account for the project as of July 2026.
