2024 Elections: Bawumia is making promises just to win power, not to implement them – Sam George

2024 Elections: Bawumia is making promises just to win power, not to implement them – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampam constituency, Sam George has stated that the Vice President and presidential candidate of the governing party for election 2024, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is making promises merely to secure power without genuine intentions of implementation.

According to him, Ghanaians were initially informed that Dr. Bawumia would contribute to improving the economy, but President Akufo-Addo no longer trusts his opinion.

"Nana Addo no longer takes Bawumia’s opinion as credible enough to even give him a chance to implement. Nana Addo no longer trusts the ability and decision-making of Dr. Bawumia," he stated on JoyNews Newsfile on Saturday, February 17.

Mr. George argued that Ghanaians have sufficient evidence to prove that Dr Bawumia is not a trustworthy choice for the country.

He highlighted instances where President Akufo-Addo went against Dr Bawumia's supposed opinions on issues like the E-levy, bet tax, emissions tax, and the size of the government.

“E-levy, Dr Bawumia - we are being told was opposed to it, the president went ahead with it. Bet tax, the president ignored Dr Bawumia, emissions tax – the president ignored him, 15% on electricity, the president ignored him. Now, we’re even seeing that the president ignored Dr Bawumia’s opinion on the size of government."

The Ningo-Prampram constituency MP stressed that the Vice President’s promise to reduce his ministers to 50 raises credibility issues, stressing that he is saying things to win power.

“With the 86, the president has the input of Dr Bawumia. If he really wanted the President to go with his fifty, he could have nominated the people who are in government on his ticket and said, Mr. President, I am redrawing my nominees so that at least the number will drop, but that is where the credibility of Dr. Bawumia comes in because we cannot really trust him,” he said.

Mr George criticised President Akufo-Addo for what he perceives as a lack of concern for critical national issues, pointing to the recent ministerial reshuffle as evidence.

He argued that the reshuffle was aimed at ensuring the survival of the NPP rather than effectively governing the country, especially considering the timing of the decision.

“He has picked people who have lost elections. Even if you are a subject-area expert, it takes you at least six months to settle in, understand the bureaucracy, and get a grasp of it.

"He brings in new people, many of whom are not subject-area specialists, with the exception of maybe Dr. Okoe Boye, who is a doctor going into the health ministry. Show me all the other appointees”, he argued.
